UKA Coach Building A Better Coaching Environment

Specific Strength by Derek Evely

  • Publication: Athletics Weekly & CACC
  • Year: 2009

Specific strength is the final category in our discussions of strength training theory. In our previous articles in this series, we dealt with the issue of how to define special strength. One of the reasons why special strength is a fairly grey area in the literature is that some top coaches do not make the distinction between special and specific strength, tending rather to lump them under a single category labeled either special or specific exercises. However, we feel it is important to differentiate these two types of training so as to better describe and explain training concepts.
