Dr Ralph Mann is the world’s foremost authority on the biomechanics of the sprints and hurdles.

A former world record holder and Olympic Silver Medalist in the 400m H, in 1982 he established the US Track and Field ‘Elite Development Programme’ that aimed to help American coaches integrate sports science into the preparation of their athletes.

During the past 28 years he has analyzed all of the worlds top performers and used this information to create computer based tools that have helped US coaches improve virtually every US sprints and hurdles athlete since the program’s inception.

On the 13 and 14th of November 2010, Ralph will be presenting at the European Sprints and Hurdles Conference in London and in this brief introductory interview he lays the foundation for his presentation.

Biography

Dr Ralph Mann is the world's foremost authority in the field of biomechanics for the sprints and hurdles. Over the years he has become a leader in performance analysis and developed the concept of Model Performance in sports movements, a programme now used to provide over 50 elite US sprinters and hurdlers with on-track performance feedback four times per year. Dr. Ralph Mann is a pioneer in conducting sports research, and using these results to produce computer-based teaching technology.

In 1982, Dr. Mann was one of the six individuals that created the Elite Athlete Program that brought sports science to USA Track and Field.

For the past 28 years, he has served as the Director of the Elite Athlete Sprint and Hurdle Program. Every elite sprinter and hurdler during this time period has been biomechanically analyzed, with the goal of understanding the characteristics of great sprinters and hurdlers. This information has been used to evaluate and improve the performance of virtually every US sprint/hurdle athlete since the program’s inception.
