UKA Coach Building A Better Coaching Environment

Biography - Tom Crick

Tom began coaching Athletics in 2004 after some time coaching other sports including football, basketball and springboard diving. He was inspired to begin sprints coaching after reading about how to improve sprint performance while working as a strength and conditioning coach for several team sports in early 2000. To fast track his Athletics coaching development he spent a great deal of time from 2000-2004 interviewing and researching the training methods of many successful athletics coaches from around the world before taking his first coaching qualifications. Many of his early interviews were later transcribed for Athletics Weekly, The Coach and published online.

In 2007 he was selected for the UKA 'Achieving Excellence in Coaching Programme' and began presenting at England Athletics East Midland development days and regional conferences. After being tasked with creating educational resources for UKA on the sprints in 2008 he was appointed as UKA's Coaching Professional Development Manager in early 2009. In this role he is responsible for overseeing the development of informal coach development across the UK including conferences, workshops, the UKA Apprentice Coach Programme and uCoach.

As a coach for Loughborough Students Athletics Club he coaches a range of athletes (including both disabled and non disabled athletes) on a voluntary basis across the sprints, hurdles and horizontal jumps. In his spare time he tries to disseminate the information he gains from his contacts around the world by writing articles on coaching and training related matters for Athletics Weekly.
