Welcome to the England Athletics endurance newsletter for October 2015. The National Road Relays are about to start and the forecast shows no rain and very slight winds, so hopefully there will be many fast times over the weekend in Sutton Coldfield. This iconic event is run by the English Road Running Association (http://www.englishroadrunningassociation.co.uk ) who do a fabulous job every year of hosting and organizing the relays. It is only by having the support of other organisations like ERRA along with England Athletics that many events survive. We are very lucky in this country to have so many dependable and enthusiastic people who are keen and able to give up their weekends to help the sport.

Good luck to the senior men and women on Saturday but don’t forget the future of the sport are competing on Sunday in the younger age groups.

Saturday October 3rd

Senior Men 13.30 p.m.

Sunday October 4th

It may be a long way off but put the evening of Saturday 21st May 2016 in your diary. Not only are we holding the England Athletics 10,000m championships at this event but it is also doubling as the Olympic trials for the GB team. If you compete in the A race then YOU COULD GET SELECTED FOR THE OLYMPICS! England internationals – development opportunities

From both the England Athletics 10 mile and 10k Championship events we hope to pick teams to send away on international trips. The final details are still being sorted so keep an eye out at http://www.englandathletics.org/england-athletics/england-athletics-team/road-running for more information and the criteria needed. However you WILL need to compete in these events if you want to be considered for selection onto the England Team.

The Age UK Leeds Abbey Dash which takes place on the 15th November is the England Athletics 10k Championships. The event organisers have extended an invitation for an England Team to compete. see http://www.englandathletics.org/england-athletics-news/england-athletics-10k-representative-opportunity for more details.

England Athletics value the importance of competitive road running opportunities for athletes in preparation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games Team long distance events, e.g. the Marathon. England Athletics therefore intend to select athletes for competitive opportunities who the Selection Panel believes have the potential to challenge for selection in the 2018 Commonwealth Games Team.

All questions related to the selection policy and the selection races should be directed to the England Athletics Road Running Coordinator, Andrew Drake at adrake@englandathletics.org.

Running studies and opportunities for testing.

A research team at Loughborough University are trying to further understand good distance running technique.

The Ideal Running Study at the University are looking to recruit female distance runners (1500 m and greater) capable of the following times during the track season:

. 10 k <35 min

. 5 k <16:35

. 3 k <9:36

. 1500 m <4:28

With the track season having come to an end, they hope it may now be a convenient time for these athletes to visit the laboratory for physiological testing for the determination of; VO2max, lactate turnpoint, running economy, body composition, and a number of indices related to running style. Participants will be provided with a physiological and biomechanical report of their running performance, and will be remunerated £100 for their time, and up to £100 travel expenses.

If you have athletes who fit this profile and are interested in this support please contact Matthew Black direct at, Research Associate, School of Sport, Exercise & Health Sciences, Loughborough University, Loughborough or by email at:
