Dear Coaches,

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of endurance coaching legend and overall superstar mentor Dave Sunderland.

When I first started coaching many of the established coaches that I looked up to were hostile and negative towards me. Not Dave! While he provided constructive criticism he was always supportive. It was Dave that made me see that my athletes, not books, were my greatest learning resource.

Together we were working to develop the Event Group Endurance Integration day and he was so excited by the concept and eager to be a part of it. In fact, this very weekend we were originally scheduled to work together on the Female Coach Legacy Programme in Birmingham, where Dave was to host the weekend’s activities. When he pulled out I knew something must be wrong but was hoping it was only a temporary issue.

Dave will be missed by so many and I am honoured that I got the chance to know him. While he may be gone his teachings will live on through all of the coaches in the UK and across the world that he helped over the years. I hope we can all do him proud and pay forward our thanks to the next generation, just like he did.

Here he is as I will always remember him, full of passion for coaching and helping developing athletes.

My deepest sympathies to his family, friends and all the athletes he has helped over the years,

Tom Crick
