What is Athletics 365?

Athletics 365 is a multi-event, young people development programme, which introduces athletes to the fundamental skills of athletics (vital to every sport). It is aimed predominantly at 8-15 year olds, but the resources can easily be adapted for use with younger athletes.

Athletics 365 focuses not only on how fast someone runs or how far someone jumps or throws but also, more importantly, on developing the technical skills (‘how’ to run, jump and throw) required to perform at full potential and move like a champion. In addition to technical skills, Athletics 365 also looks at an athlete’s physical, mental and emotional development, as well as their lifestyle and social development.

The Athletics 365 programme is broken down into nine progressive stages. Each stage provides athletes with new and progressively more difficult challenges appropriate to their stage of development. Athletics 365 encourages athletes to learn all the skills and events of athletics, and reinforces the importance of a good all round skill base.

The stages can be seen as similar to progression in other sports, such as the martial arts ‘belt system’ or the gymnastics ‘badge system.’

Through Athletics 365, England Athletics believe young people will develop the skills and confidence to excel in life; not only in athletics, but in other sports and other life pursuits.

New Online Video Support for Athletics 365

England Athletics and UKA are happy to announce the launch of the New Athletics 365 online video support clips. This section of uCoach will provide coaches with an extensive library of video clips covering each of the Athletics 365 challenges. The footage is designed to enhance coaches’ understanding of the various Athletics 365 challenges and how these should be delivered.

Each clip provides coaches with an example of a young athletes demonstrating competent technique for the various stages of progression. This is a valuable resource to enhance coaches’ understanding of good technique and for athletes to view during sessions.

What resources are there to help clubs implement Athletics 365?

England Athletics have developed two main products to support the implementation of Athletics 365 by clubs across the country. These are:

• The Coach Pack

• The Athlete’s Record of Achievement Pack

The Coach’s Pack provides a coach with the technical coaching cards and example game cards to help them deliver Athletics 365. Each technical coaching task card highlights the key coaching points to ensure every athlete is able to develop their full potential.

The Athlete’s Record of Achievement Pack is used to help the athlete keep a record of all the activities they have successfully completed, and how they are improving as an athlete. The Athlete pack also provides the young person with the specific challenges they need to meet for every area of Athletics 365, and the coaching points required to help them achieve these.

The Athlete’s Record of Achievement Pack also contains information on the History of Athletics, and what Athletics 365 is all about. Athletics has produced some of the greatest sports people in British history, and England Athletics feels Athletics 365 will help achieve even more successful athletes in the future.
