An Evening With David Hemery: Part One

In the first part of this video legend of british athletics David Hemery discusses his career in front of an audience.

Hemery boasts a complete set of Olympic medals with Silver (4x400m relay) and Bronze (400m Hurdles) from the 1972 Olympics married to the gold medal he won in the 400m hurdles in the 1968 games. Not only was his winning time that year of 48.12 a new world record but also the biggest winning margin in the event since 1924. That year Hemery claimed the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award and was made a CBE a year later. Hemery's first international successes came over the sprint hurdles where he claimed the 1966 Commonwealth title over 120 yards and then the 110m version in the following games in 1970. Hemery also won silver in the 1969 European Championships over 110m hurdles.

Following the ending of his track career Hemery went on to coach in both the UK and the United States before becoming the first president of UK Athletics.
