UKA Coach Building A Better Coaching Environment


Decisions, Decisions, Decisions or just decisions? (Part 1)

Andy Abrahams presents at the European Coaching Conference for Walks hosted by Leeds Metropolitan University. He looks at the current research into decision making capabilities, what drives this and how awareness of these can have an influence on our learning and coaching.

Having completed his BSc in Sport and Exercise Science, Andy's initial foray into the coaching world was working with Dave Collins as a research assistant on an effective coaching project for the Lawn Tennis Association. Upon completion of this work Andy moved to University of Luton as a lecturer in sport coaching. From there Andy moved onto Bell College in Hamiltonwhere he spent seven and a half years as Area Leader for Sport and Tourism and subsequently Academic Director for Sport following the merger between Bell College and the University ofPaisley. During his time at Bell Andy led the development of degrees in Sport Coaching and Sport Development in line with a doubling of student and staff numbers. Whilst at Bell Andy linked up with Dave Collins and Russell Martindale at EdinburghUniversity to complete a major study for the UK Sport Institute attracting £21,500 in funding. This study examined the validity of models of coaching and talent development with expert coaches from a range of sports. In addition to these academic roles Andy has also worked with various sports in coach education and coaching roles.
