Brent Vallance: Race Walking Long Term development (part 1)

Brent Vallance discusses the process of developing a world class walker and how he lead Jarred Tallent to double Olympic Gold.

  • Coaching experience: Brent was an Australian representative Athlete between 1995-1998 at Race Walking, while completing his Bachelor of Sports Science Degree in Sports Coaching at the University of NSW. In 2003, Brent was offered 18 month study and work experience placement within the scholarship coaching program at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) working closely with some of Australia’s best senior coaches in Athletics (Tudor Bidder, Craig Hilliard and Professor Dick Telford). During this period Brent Coached Nathan Deakes to World Walking Cup and Olympic Bronze medals, and recruited to the AIS in Canberra the then 19 year old Jared Tallent, who went on to be the double Olympic Medalist in Beijing. Brent was appointed the AIS Race Walking Coach in 2005 and has since helped develop Race Walking to be consistently the most successfull event group in Australian Athletics and has seen the AIS program double the number of scholarships it can offer in race Walking to 12 athletes including  junior athletes for the first time in the AIS program’s history. In 2008 Brent was awarded Athletics Australia Coach of the Year.
