Derek Evely: Annual Planning in 7 Easy Steps

In this video presentation, Loughborough High Performance Centre Director Derek Evely walks you through how to create an Annual Plan for an athlete in any event.

Evely is the National Performance Centre Director at Loughborough and has coached athletes ranging from Tyler Christopher in the 400m to Gary Reed in the 800m to Dylan Armstrong and Sophie Hitchon in the hammer.

    You do have to stay with the lecture but it is worth it. Lots of things to ponder over and lots of comments to make you question your own methods of coaching. The simple model, Preparation/Conditioning Phase, Specific Phase, Competition Period does fit in but very subtley. I think the bottom line is there is no substitute for good planning and you are never too old to learn.

    I want to apply the 7 step annual planning process to endurance events. I wonder if there is a baseline blueprint for middle/long distance and marathon, which I then can adapt for individuals?

    At present there is no baseline blueprint that is endurance specific. However, you can download the blank template from here:

    and make the adjustments yourself. Some ideas on how to set up the categories for endurance are discussed at the end of the Exercise Classification Hierarchy Podcast here on uCoach.

    Look under the RESOURCES > DOCUMENTS for some more example plans.

    A question I have is how do you plan for training for hour sessions 3 times a week, and include all the classifications?

    Hi David, I have had a look and reset the video. There are some compatibility issues with these videos that are presently out of our immediate control. The video should work on a google chrome browser, but may not work on mobile devices. I can only apologise for this.

    Thanks Richard. I use a MAC & Safari browser. I’ve tried viewing these on my wife’s windows machine using chrome & they play ok on that.
