Derek Evely: Physical Preparation

Derek Evely presents the keynote speech to developmental coaches in Lee Valley where he discusses physical preparation and its importance in building better athletes at an elite level. He covers the fundamental components of speed, mechanics, strength, work capacity.

As a coach at Kamloops Track Club in Canada, Evely trained Shane Niemi to a national junior record of 45.83 seconds in the 400 meters and guided a young Gary Reed, who went on to win a silver medal in the 800 meters at the 2007 World Championships. During this time he also coached Dylan Armstrong (2011 World Championship Silver Medalist in Shot) who was initially a successful hammer thrower setting the North American junior record of 70.66m (since broken by Conor McCullough) and achieving a second place finished at the World Junior Championships. At this point Evely began to transition Armstrong to shot putt, where he quickly approached 20 meters.

However, what he may be best known for in Kamloops is persuading Dr. Anatolyi Bondarchuk, legendary former head coach of the USSR, to move to the town and help Armstrong further progress in his new event. In 2005 Evely left Kamloops to work at the Canadian Athletics Coaching Centre in Edmonton, where he helped establish one of the world’s best online coaching resource and coach a stable of athletes including world 400 meter medalist Tyler Christopher and Canadian national 400 meter hurdle record holder Adam Kunkel. In 2009 Evely moved to the UK, where he used the concepts he learned from Bondarchuk and others to help Sophie Hitchon win the World Junior Championships and set numerous British senior records in the Hammer.
