Heavy Throws: Roundtable Question and Answer Session

A roundtable question and answer session including input from Dr Anatoliy Bondarchuk, Chris Black, Dave Smith, Shaun Pickering and Dylan Armstrong. Questions range from technical hammer considerations, ways of dealing with the psychological pressure of elite level competition and thoughts on the limits of hammer throwing distances.

Dr Anatoliy Bondarchuk was a highly successful athlete as 1972 Olympic Champion, multiple European Championships and a former world record holder. Despite this track record he is perhaps better known for his coaching pedigree. He developed the USSR National Team throws program from 1976 to 1992, he has coached athletes to medals at 5 Olympic games including coaching current World Record holder and two time Olympic champion in the hammer Yuri Sedych. Dr Bondarchuk currently works and coaches in Canada and counts Canadian record holders Dylan Armstrong and Sultana Frizell among his athletes. His influence goes further than just his coaching, coaches implementing his system has led to the success of 2008 Olympic Champion Primoz Kozmus and even our UK womens record holder Sophie Hitchon amongst many others.

Chris Francis Black is a retired Scottish hammer throw, who represented Great Britain at two consecutive summer olympics, starting in 1976. His best Olympic result was finishing in seventh place at the 1976 summer olympics, throwing 73.18m. He also has a 17th place finish at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki to his credit and attended four commonwealth Games, taking two bronze medals. He coached Mark Dry from late 2007 until 2009 from a personal best of 57m up to 69.40m

Dave Smith is a retired hammer thrower who attended 3 Commonwealth game, 2 World Championships, a European Championships and an Olympic Games. In that time he took a Gold medal in the 1986 Commonwealths and a Silver in 1990. He ended his career with a personal best of 77.30m set in 1985. He is the father to Alex and Peter Smith both current Hammer throwers, Alex represented Team GB at the London 2012 Olympics. Dave also coaches a group of hammer throwers including his son Peter in the Humberside Region.

Shaun Pickering the son of former BBC Television commentator Ron, is employed by UK Athletics as national event coach for heavy throws. Pickering, represented Britian at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and, representing Wales, won a bronze medal in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumapur, he ended his athletics career with a 20.45m personal best in the shot put.
